Took me a couple of weeks comparing quotes on yacht insurance before spring launch. The first thing I learned: a low premium often means gaps in coverage. Check whether the hull is insured at agreed value or ACV — with ACV, depreciation eats your claim after a total loss. If the boat is older, expect the insurer to ask for a recent survey. The hard part is the policy language, so a good starting point is yacht insurance — it covers the main policy terms in plain English. Also read the navigation limits carefully: cruising outside them can get a claim denied. On the East Coast and the Gulf, the named storm deductible is usually a percentage of hull value, not a flat amount. Don't skimp on liability either — wreck removal and damage to other boats can exceed the value of the boat itself. Compare two or three carriers and go through the exclusions before you sign.
